PepsiCo Resourcing

PepsiCo Resourcing

Role: Lead Designer - Solo
Project Type: HR Resourcing, Dashboards (PowerBI)
Design System: PepsiCo Design System

About the Project
With over 300,000 employees, PepsiCo empowers organizational leaders to manage their people resources. The Digital Products & Services team required a custom solution to help manage the availability of resources and track spending across teams and projects, which was being done through an excel document on a sharepoint site. The OneRoster project aimed to implement security features and automate data dashboards that would allow team leads to track spend and manage their reports’ allocations.

Streamline Existing Data

For an MVP, the goal was to leverage existing data as-is while applying the PepsiCo design system to refresh the look of the application. However, existing dashboards broke out charts and graphs into almost 20 different tabs. After discussion with end users and product owners, a new information hierarchy was proposed that managed to retain all the existing data on 7 tabs instead.

New Designs for a New Audience

Additionally, senior leadership would get a new overview screen to allow them to quickly get a high level view of headcount breakdowns, employee locations, and cost over time. This would use data already available on other screens, but presented at a higher level than most existing users were viewing it.

Post MVP Vision:
A New Way to View Allocations

While development began for dashboards, additional exploration was done on the people management side of the application. Allocation, role, and employee data was all being shown on different screens, requiring users to bounce between them in order to manage any one user so the priority was to combine the experience onto a single screen to give a full picture of employee details.

Personal Reflection
This was one of my favorite projects at PepsiCo because of the team I got to work with. This project was being spearheaded by a team of 3 extremely passionate SMEs, who would be users on launch, and really embraced a collaborative and iterative design and development process. Additionally, my engineering partners were quick to flag technical constraints, especially when it came to PowerBI not being able to match the PepsiCo Design System, so we were able to adjust designs very early in the process to avoid design debt down the road.

If I had the opportunity to further refine this project, I would have loved to integrate the people management side of the application more closely with the dashboards. Under the current designs, people management and resource dashboards are coded as 2 separate branches from the homepage, but there is an opportunity to connect the two so drilling down in the dashboards could take a user into a specific person’s details.
